President – Founder LAG Translations
Liam Gallagher was born and educated in Northern Ireland. In 1978, he graduated from the Queen’s University of Belfast with a degree in Russian (including a 4-month assignment in the Soviet Union in 1977) and French. In February 1979, fleeing the political and social unrest in Northern Ireland, which had affected him personally, as well as the dismal employment outlook, he went to London after receiving an offer to join Lloyds Bank International, an opportunity that saw him transferred to Brazil in August of that year on a two-year assignment as a trainee, in Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Bahia and São Paulo. In September 1981, upon his return from home leave he took up his first junior executive assignment with the bank in the commercial area of São Paulo branch, working with British and Japanese multinational companies and, three years later, he moved to Curitiba as assistant regional manager, working with cooperatives and agribusiness/commodity companies. Upon his return to São Paulo in 1986, he worked for the bank, firstly in the commercial area, before moving to the domestic treasury division in 1988, then to the international correspondent banking and trade finance unit in 1989. This move saw him give up his expatriate status, to become a local executive, confirming his desire to stay and pursue a career in Brazil. He subsequently left Lloyds Bank in 1993, joining Banco Mercantil São Paulo in 1994, where he headed up their international correspondent banking and trade finance unit, including two stints as interim general manager at their New York Branch. During this period, he completed his Business Administration course at Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo, specializing in international finance.
In the wake of the wave of consolidation in the banking sector, he parted company with the bank in 2002, initially working as a freelance Business English consultant and translator for 2 years before joining a major Brazilian translation agency as international business development manager in 2004. Two years later, he left this company to create his own translation business – LAG Traduções, based out of a home office in São Paulo, a business he continues to successfully manage to this day. In 2007, he completed his Executive MBA course in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the Brazilian Business School (BBS) in São Paulo, and in 2012, he obtained his certificate as an interpreter in the English language from the Pontificate Catholic University (PUC) of São Paulo.
Currently, he continues to provide Portuguese/English/Portuguese translation services, primarily in the fields of economics, finance, sustainability, compliance and marketing and IT. Other language combinations are available by arrangement. He also works as a consecutive and simultaneous interpreter at seminars, conferences and business meetings, and continues providing consultancy in Business English, including in-company courses and immersions. He is a regular guest speaker both at translation events and at universities that teach translation and interpreting, and has also given presentations on localization, globalization and internationalization of products and services to chambers of commerce and academia.
He lives with his Brazilian wife and son in São Paulo, and has a daughter living and working in Europe.
